Dr. Muhammet Tiryaki

Short Biography

Muhammet Esat Tiryaki holds a PhD in Sociology from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Department of Social Sciences, Urban and Regional Sociology). He is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Sociology, Technical University Berlin (Department of Sociology of Space), where he has also taught as a Lecturer.

He previously held positions as Research Assistant and Lecturer at Istanbul Technical University (Department of Urban and Regional Planning) and as Research Fellow and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Department of Urban and Regional Sociology). He also conducted research at HafenCity Universität Hamburg (Department of Urban Planning).

Research Interests

His research interests include urban and regional planning, critical urban studies, social (in)equalities, mobilities, ethnographic and qualitative methods, and geographic information systems (ArcGIS). His work focuses on urban markets and the sociology of mobility, with particular attention to the politics of encounters and practices of belonging. His current postdoctoral project examines networks, mobilities, and practices of belonging among taxi and Uber drivers in Berlin and Istanbul.
