The work of the chair focusses on investigations in the field of solid state theory. The 'Semiconductor Theory' group (PD Dr rer. nat. habil. U. Wulf) deals with the transport properties of nanoscale electronic components, while the 'Superconductivity and Electronic Correlations' group (Prof. Dr rer. nat. habil. G. Seibold) focuses on electronic inhomogeneities in systems with strong electron-electron interactions.

A quad-core Opteron cluster with 24 nodes (each with two quad-core processors) is available to the department for the numerical treatment of problems.

In the field of teaching, the chair covers courses and special lectures in Theoretical Physics in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes in Physics and offers modules for General Studies.
