Meet the team

Meet the team: Dr. Ivan Pryvalov - a short interview. We introduce the EIZ Staff Members who are working passionately to create the sustainable, networked and digitalized energy system of the future.

Dr. Ivan Pryvalov studied computer science in Ukraine and cryptography and IT security in Germany. He received his doctorate from Saarland University in 2022 on the topic of cryptography and anonimity and worked as a postdoc in Luxembourg in the field of e-voting. Since May 2023, he has been a member of the team at the Energy Innovation Center (EIZ) at the Chair of IT Security under the direction of Prof. Andriy Panchenko. Here he heads the Young Investigator Group (YIG) ‘IT Security in Energy Systems’ in the Control Systems and Cyber Security Lab (COSYS) of the EIZ.

1. What topics are the scientists in your group working on?

In our group, we work on various topics related to the cyber security of multi-energy systems. The topics range from attack and anomaly detection in digitally networked energy systems to protecting the privacy of end users.

2. How does this research contribute to advancing the energy transition?

Energy networks, which are becoming increasingly complex and connected to the Internet, can become the target of cyber-attacks that can jeopardise the stability of networks or lead to the loss of private information. Our research contributes to the development of tools to detect anomalies and attacks in future energy systems and to protect the privacy of end users.

3. Lusatia is undergoing change. What is your personal vision for Lusatia in 2050, what do you wish for the future development of this region?

I am very excited to see how the region will continue to develop and embrace innovation in the energy sector. In the long term, I see Lusatia as an attractive place to live and work.

4. What makes working at BTU special for you?

In my current position, I have the opportunity to research applied interdisciplinary topics that broaden my research interests. I really enjoy working in a team and contributing to the EIZ project. Last but not least, the opportunity to live close to the university contributes to a better work-life balance.

5. What are your personal highlights in Cottbus? What should you definitely try out when you're here?

Cottbus is a green city. It is very easy to get around by bike. There is often a lot going on in the city centre. I'm also curious to see when Cottbus' Ostsee will be completely flooded and it will be a good place to spend time.

Thank you, Ivan, for the interview and all the best for your research work!
