Article on the topic of ‘Exploring Design Principles for SME Complementor-Suitable Digital Platforms’ published in the journal ‘Acta Informatica Pragensia’
Against the backdrop of growing power asymmetries in dominant platform ecosystems, the contribution addresses how digital platforms can be designed in a more stakeholder-centric way to better account for the specific needs and vulnerabilities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) acting as complementors. Using a qualitative reflective meta-analysis that combines explorative expert interviews with SME specialists and a thematic literature review, the authors derive eleven meta-requirements that are synthesized into four overarching design principles: SME empowerment, open boundaries, transparent and fair participation terms, and reflection of individuality, which together aim to guide researchers and practitioners in developing SME-suitable platform models.
