East German Migration History(s) in the Cottbus City Museum
For a long time, the role of migrants in eastern Germany was hardly discussed. This is about to change: As part of the MigOst project, exchange meetings are taking place in cultural institutions in Dresden, Halle and Cottbus. The host in Cottbus is the Stadtmuseum.
Everyone who has experience of migration in the GDR, during reunification or later in Cottbus is invited to attend, as are previous participants in the project and those who are interested but have no connection with migration. In this way, migrant perspectives on the history of Cottbus will be collected, which in turn will provide impulses for an exhibition in the city museum. The talks will be accompanied by Steffen Krestin, head of the municipal collections. The exchange meetings were preceded by narrative cafés and biographical interviews, the results of which are now being processed.
The project "East German Migration Society Tells Its Own Story" is a research network of the Center for Integration Studies at the Technical University of Dresden, the umbrella organization of migrant organizations in East Germany and the Brandenburg Technical University Cottbus-Senftenberg in cooperation with the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore Dresden and the German Center for Integration and Migration Research. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In Halle MigOst cooperates with the City Museum, in Dresden with the Staatsschauspiel.
The first exchange meeting will take place on Saturday, April 15, 2023, 1 - 4 pm at the Stadtmuseum Cottbus, Bahnhofstraße 22, 03046 Cottbus.
