Focus on cooperation with Iraqi university

A delegation of representatives from the Iraqi embassy and Al Zahrawi University therefore visited the chair on the BTU's Campus Senftenberg during the current semester break.
Al Zahrawi University is a medical university founded in 2013 in the central Iraqi city of Kerbala, which also operates several hospitals in the capital Baghdad.

The delegation, led by embassy attaché Dr Alaa Alshujiery, was particularly interested in the therapeutic approach and didactic teaching concept. Prof. Dr Sven Michel, Head of the Chair of Therapy Sciences II, is pushing for a reduction to biological reference variables, incorporating reliable findings from performance structure research and implementing innovative sensor technology as control and monitoring instruments. "This is exactly what we are looking for and what we want to learn from," says Prof. Dr Salam Ahjel, Medical Rector of the Iraqi university.

As a result of the visit, further meetings were arranged to discuss student exchanges, joint research projects and academic qualification programmes. "I am excited about this request, as I have been interested in the therapeutic approaches of the Arab world for a long time," emphasises Prof. Michel. "When there wasn't even a sewage system in Europe, there were already hospitals with hygienic standards and medical schools in Kerbala. In this respect, it can be assumed that we can also benefit from the knowledge and skills of our Arab colleagues."

Background:
Prof. Sven Michel, Head of the BTU's Chair of Therapy Sciences II, initiated a collaboration with the American University in southern Cyprus three years ago. Among other things, the focus here is on the academic education of war refugees and displaced persons from the Arab world. As this also affects many young Iraqis, the Iraqi embassy in Berlin requested cooperation.
