MIKOWA Publication No. 5/2021
Controversies about human dignity and human rights have been found in various philosophical, political, and religious currents for many decades. These disputes are outlined below. Special attention will be given to the postcolonial critique of the Western canon of knowledge on the emergence of human rights; in order to further discuss the question of how far the ineffectiveness of human rights for refugees, already thematized by Hannah Arendt, is anchored in epistemic dominance and continues in the methodological nationalism of social work. It is also necessary to ask about further historical and ongoing processes of hierarchizing rights for people that are relevant in the context of social work.
