Public lecture focuses on the future after coal

What opportunities for transformation arise in connection with the coal phase-out in Lusatia and worldwide? What challenges must be met in this context? These questions will be the focus of the "Open BTU" lecture series on Wednesday, November 23, 2022, 5:30 p.m., at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU).

All interested parties are invited to the lecture event "How to continue after coal? Opportunities and challenges of the transformation in Lusatia and worldwide" in the central lecture hall building, on the central campus Cottbus of the BTU, Audimax 1. Registration is not required. Admission is free.

The speakers are:

  • Prof. Dr. Pao-Yu Oei, professor of economics of energy system transformation and head of the industrial engineering program at the European University Flensburg (EUF) and the 30-member "CoalExit" research group at EUF, TU Berlin and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin),
  • Nora Stognief, research associate in the Department of Energy and Environmental Management at EUF and visiting scholar at the Department of Economic and Infrastructure Policy at TU Berlin, whose research focuses on structural change in the Lausitz lignite region from the interdisciplinary perspective of transformation research.

The global coal phase-out is one of the key measures to mitigate the climate catastrophe. How must the energy systems change for this, and how can the transformation in the coal regions be designed in a socially acceptable way? These are the questions the interdisciplinary research group CoalExit is addressing by studying regional coal exit processes in Germany, Europe and beyond. The lecture will provide an insight into the research and show, among other things, what we can learn from past coal exit processes, that 100 percent renewables are possible, why natural gas is not a bridging technology and what role women play in structural change.

Date: Wednesday, November 23, 2022, 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Location: Audimax 1 at the BTU's central campus, Konrad-Wachsmann-Allee 3, 03046 Cottbus, Germany.

About the lecture series "Open BTU"
From October 19, 2022 to January 25, 2023, the public lecture series "Open BTU" offers interesting insights into exciting scientific fields. This semester's topic is "Energy transition and structural change in Germany and globally". The interdisciplinary lectures incorporate current research approaches at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. With this educational format, which is open to all interested parties, the university's Center for Continuing Education supports lifelong learning and promotes the transfer of knowledge and ideas in the region by addressing socially relevant issues. In doing so, the BTU cooperates with other universities and institutions. After each lecture, there will be an opportunity for questions and exchange with the speakers. Interested parties are cordially invited to attend the wide range of events.
