Turgut Saner

Full-time professor at the Faculty of Architecture, Dept. of History of Architecture – Istanbul Technical University. Master studies on the “19th c. Ottoman Orientalism” (1988) and doctoral degree at ITU on the topic “Hellenistic Masonry in Asia Minor” (1995). Participation at numerous excavations and surveys in Turkey (among others, Arykanda, Binbirkilise, Hagia Thekla, Anastasiopolis and Zenonopolis). Director of the architectural survey at Larisa in Aeolis from 2010 onwards. Guest professor at Karlsruhe University (2003/04, WS/SS) and Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich (2008/09 WS), as well as at the universities in Berlin, Trento, Valencia and Tokyo. Research interests majorly cover the early stages of ancient Greek architecture in Asia Minor and the reception of European styles in late Ottoman art and architecture.

Currently involved in two projects as initiator and organizer: “The evaluation of the excavation archives of the Istanbul Archaeological Museums” and the preparation of an exhibition on “the manifold facets of ornaments selected from Sadberk Hanim Museum’s (Istanbul) archaeological and Islamic collections”.

The main research project “Larisa” has been proceeding with on-site documentations, ongoing doctoral dissertations all aiming to clarify the settlement dynamics of this Aeolian site whose Classical period lifespan lasted only from the 7th to the end of the 4th century BCE.
