Prof. Dr. Rainer Herd is "Honored Geologist of Mongolia

Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Rainer Herd of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) has been awarded Mongolia's highest honor in the field of geology.

The honor was bestowed on the expert for raw material exploration during a festive event for the 60th anniversary of the German-Mongolian Expeditions in December 2022 at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. A Mongolian delegation led by the former Minister of Geology Dr. Choijin Khurts awarded Prof. Dr. Rainer Herd the title of "Meritorious Geologist of Mongolia" for his raw material exploration work and his support in the education of Mongolian students.

Prof. Dr. Rainer Herd has been supporting the geoscientific education of Mongolian students at the German-Mongolian University of Resources and Technology (GMIT) for many years by contributing to the development of curricula and by offering practice-oriented courses. Furthermore, he and his team carry out raw material explorations with the airborne measuring system (research aircraft) developed at the Chair under difficult conditions and with great personal commitment in various areas of the country (Gobi Desert, Hangai Mountains, Ulaanbaatar region) in cooperation with governmental institutions and the GMIT. The activities are financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
