Lecture series on the culture of remembrance starts on May 21 in Spremberg/Grodk

Presence office and city Spremberg/Grodk organize joint series in the Science Year 2024 - Freedom

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Basic Law and 35 years since the Peaceful Revolution. Two anniversaries that offer an opportunity to spend a year looking at freedom in all its facets. This is the occasion for a series of lectures in Spremberg/Grodk entitled "Why we need a critical culture of remembrance for our future". The five events, which will take place from May to October 2024, will also address the topics of democracy, freedom and responsibility by looking at National Socialism, the SED dictatorship, the period of reunification and anti-Semitism.

The lecture series is one of the 35 projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the Year of Freedom. The BMBF received a total of 232 applications from scientific institutions such as the University of Hamburg, the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, the Social Science Research Center Berlin and Wissenschaft im Dialog.

The town of Spremberg/Grodk, together with the state's presence office, will be hosting the four lectures and a reading at the Spreekino in Spremberg/Grodk from May 21, 2024 as part of the Science Year 2024 on the topic of "Freedom". The 45-minute lectures will be followed by a further three-quarters of an hour for discussion.

Background

The Science Years have been the central activity of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in science communication for more than 20 years. Each year the focus is on a different topic.

This year it is freedom. This was the reason for the presence office in Spremberg/Grodk to initiate a series of lectures. After all, one of the tasks of the seven presence centers in the state of Brandenburg is to make science and research more present in the regions. The presence center has been in Spremberg since 2018.

What would research be without freedom? What would freedom be without responsibility? What would we be without freedom? The Science Year 2024 is exploring the various dimensions of freedom today, tomorrow and worldwide in a wide range of events. A large number of events are taking place throughout Germany. Further information can be found at: https://www.wissenschaftsjahr.de/2024/

All lectures will take place at the Spreekino in Spremberg/Grodk from 5:30 - 7 pm.

The event is free of charge.

Registration is welcome and makes planning easier. Anyone can also come to the event unregistered.
