The pupils university shows how wind turbines and co. get into the computer

Numerical simulations will be the focus of the pupils university at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) on 17 December 2025 and 28 January 2026.

Interested parties from years seven to ten are invited to the practical lecture "How do wind turbines & co. get into the computer?" on Wednesday, 17 December at 4 p.m. in the large lecture theatre of the Konrad Zuse Media Centre at BTU's Campus Senftenberg.
On Wednesday, 28 January 2026, this one-hour lecture can be experienced in Audimax 2 in the central lecture hall building on the university's main campus in Cottbus from 3:30 pm.
Registration is not required.

The officer is Dr Marten Klein, research associate at the Chair of Numerical Fluid and Gas Dynamics at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

Computers calculate very quickly with lots of numbers. But: They only know the basic arithmetic operations! If you manage to translate a difficult problem into many simple calculation steps, then computers can be utilised. This is important, for example, when analysing flows, which are often so complicated that we can only predict them using supercomputers. This is known as numerical simulation. Participants at the student university will learn how to package Mathematics and Physics in algorithms that are understandable for computers and see examples of how theory can be applied in practice.

The BTU's pupils university offers interested pupils the opportunity to understand scientific and technical topics and is intended to awaken a desire for discovery and research. This gives them the chance to develop their own skills and expand their talents. Together with Sparkasse Niederlausitz, BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg is offering an attractive new programme in which those interested can work on various projects in small teams and consolidate their knowledge on excursions.
