At the 14th International Conference on LEEM/PEEM in Tokyo, Björn Riedel won the ‘Ernst Bauer Student Poster Award’, which was presented for the first time. It was Bauer who first invented low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM).

From the current 2026/27 winter semester, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) will be launching a course in Sorbian/Wendish as a teaching subject as part of its Bachelor’s degree programmes for the Teaching Degree for Primary Education. The first students were warmly welcomed to the Campus Senftenberg/Zły Komorow on 8 October.

On Saturday, 10 October 2026, the LausitzLabs will launch at Start Block B2 in Cottbus. From day one, the BTU has been investigating how the concept drives structural change. With the LausitzLabs, a coherent and scalable educational ecosystem is being established in Lusatia for STEM, media and digital education, as well as democratic participation.

An international research team has developed a plastic that is made up of 50 per cent renewable raw materials, is produced in a more energy-efficient manner and can be selectively broken down at the end of its useful life. The Department of Polymer Chemistry at BTU Senftenberg has made a key contribution to this. The findings have now been published in the journal *Chem Circularity*.

On 10 September 2026, students from the student environmental group EcoNET presented their project ‘GUMNO – The Campus Sponge Garden’ at the DINI Annual Conference and ZKI Autumn Conference in Aachen. They returned to Cottbus with the top prize in the competition ‘Designing a Sustainable University – Launch Your Future Project’ and prize money of 3,500 euros.

The Federal University of Viçosa (UFV, Brazil) is hosting an international online hackathon for students from UFV and the EUNICE partner universities. The event is being organised in collaboration with the EUNICE university alliance and supported by tecnoPARQ – the Viçosa Technology Park.

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) extends a warm welcome to numerous new exchange students for the academic year 2026/27. Through the ERASMUS+ and STUDEXA exchange programs, students from around the globe have arrived in Cottbus to study at BTU for one or two semesters and play an active role in university life.

The young Nigerian woman has been studying for a Master’s degree in Transfers-Fluids-Materials in Aeronautical and Space Applications (TFM-ASA) at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) since 2025. She has successfully completed her dissertation at the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) on the topic of electrified propeller technologies.
