Interview with BTU Alumnus Ralf Apitz (Architektur)

"Because of the international, good image, I decided to study at the BTU."

Ralf Apitz studied architecture in Cottbus and was responsible project manager for the construction of the new start-up center "Startblock B2" at the central campus. The building offers space for founders, startups and young companies, who can rent their own offices here or simply use the co-working facilities. In addition, events, workshops, consultations and meetings on entrepreneurial topics take place in the building. The BTU Gründungsservice and the Startup Revier EAST have also moved in. In addition, the COLab is located here, which offers fantastic equipment as a hands-on workshop for building prototypes or taking the first steps in the implementation of ideas. In short, start-up enthusiasts will find everything they need here.

Hello Ralf, how did you find out about the program and the BTU?
After graduating as a bricklayer with a high school diploma, I decided to add a degree to my training. At that time, I had the choice between civil engineering and architecture. I chose architecture because the combination of the technical and creative parts of construction appealed to me. I started my bachelor studies (full-time) at the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences and successfully completed them. Due to private circumstances, I then decided to study part-time for a master's degree at the BTU. For me it was always important to stay in the Cottbus region. For this reason and because of the international, good image, I decided to study at the BTU.

You were responsible for the great and large construction project of the start-up center "Startblock B2" at the central campus. What were your tasks in this project?
In the "Startblock B2" project, I was responsible for managing the construction and planning process on the side of the owner, Gebäudewirtschaft Cottbus GmbH. I was in charge of coordinating the planning of the building and the tendering of all necessary services, for the supervision of the construction process up to the accounting and documentation of the measure. Since this multitude of tasks can only be accomplished by a well-functioning team, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my entire project team for their great cooperation.

Construction projects are always highly complex, stressful projects. What are your tips for dealing with the demands, especially for young professionals?
Due to the complexity of the tasks, one should always be aware that the tasks cannot be handled alone. All challenges that a project involves should always be tackled and solved as a team. It is important that communication should always take place at eye level. This creates a pleasant and trusting working atmosphere.

What do you think of most when you remember your own student days?
The wonderful parties and the not infrequent night shifts in the studio. Of my professors, who always helped me in word and deed when a solution seemed out of reach, and of the very good food in the cafeteria.
