Meet the Team
Mirko Nikodinoski completed his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Jacobs University Bremen, followed by a M.Sc. in Power Engineering at BTU Cottbus. After spending some time in the power electronics semiconductor industry (ABB Semiconductors - Lenzburg), he started his doctoral studies at the BTU. Subsequently, in February 2023, he was assigned the role of Group Lead of the High Power Grid Converter Lab (HPGC) at the Chair of Power Electronics and Drive Systems headed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Georg Möhlenkamp.
1. What topics are the researchers in your group working on?
Renewable energy sources and energy storage solutions utilize power electronics. The existing converter technologies are not easily scaled up. Therefore, our research group is working on theoretical concepts as well as hardware models which fit the high power and high voltage demands of utility scale converters.
2. How does this research contribute to advancing the energy transition?
Our research will develop solutions that would enable an optimized converter concept for storage power plants. A few demonstration prototypes and most importantly, new expertise for development of these prototypes will support the German Energy Transition.
3. Lusatia is undergoing change. What is your personal vision for Lusatia in 2050, what do you wish for the future development of this region?
Personally, I believe that it will be an enormous challenge which would bring a corresponding economic and social development. First, I wish a lot of success to everyone directly or indirectly involved in the regional structural change. Next, to everyone who enjoys a challenge and wants to keep Lusatia as a power house but minus coal from the equation, I invite them to join the effort towards the future of energy.
4. What makes working at BTU special for you?
The freedom for scientific creativity is one of the unique features of my work at the BTU. This means that new scientific ideas can be implemented within a structure that ensures safety, reasonable expenditures and progress. The atmosphere between all staff is friendly, cooperative and supportive, which makes the scientific tasks less stressful and more fun.
5. What are your personal highlights in Cottbus? What should you definitely try out when you are here?
My Cottbus highlights would be:
- Theater plays and ballet evenings at the wonderful State Theater Cottbus.
- Branitzer Palace for a museum visit or night time Scavenger (Treasure) hunt.
- Biking to one of the many lakes in the area.
Thank you, Mirko, for the interview and all the best for your research work!
