Guest Lectures

The guest lecture series of the “Measuring Sustainability” module under the Chair of Environmental Planning invites established industry experts and researchers to present their work to our students and faculty.

This entails talks focusing on publishing with journals, challenges of climate adaptation and SDGs in rural municipalities in Germany, carbon accounting in companies, implementation of SDG 5, and climate action on a multilayered UNESCO World Heritage site in Berlin.

Information on Guest Lectures

Angelos Alamanos - 03.11.2025

Angelos Alamanos is a Civil Engineer, a graduate of the University of Thessaly, Greece, where he subsequently earned his PhD, applying hydro-economic optimization models and multi-criteria analysis to develop integrated decision support systems for water management under climate change. During his PhD, he was a visiting scholar at the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy.

He then held a postdoctoral position at the University of Waterloo, Canada, focusing on Systems Analysis and Environmental Economics. Subsequently, Angelos worked as a Policy Analyst in Water Services at the National Water Forum of Ireland. He joined Nature Sustainability in May 2022 and has been a Senior Editor since May 2024, handling primarily research and opinion pieces from civil engineering, environmental and ecological economics, development and policy studies, as well as a range of interdisciplinary contributions.

His talk would focus on advances in sustainability research and publishing in ‘Nature Sustainability.’

Jerome R. Haßler -17.11.2025

Mr. Haßler has many years of international experience in urban and regional development, climate adaptation, energy efficiency, and sustainable urban planning. After working on EU- and UN-funded projects – including for ICLEI, UNDP, UN ESCAP, and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung – he is currently employed as a Climate Adaptation Manager in the municipal administration of the City of Luckau.

His main areas of expertise include the development and implementation of local climate adaptation strategies, project and funding management, and stakeholder engagement. He also has extensive experience in public speaking and knowledge transfer, including lectures at Newcastle University (UK) and Bangkok University (Thailand).

His presentation explores how local climate adaptation efforts can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using the example of an integrated approach in the rural municipality of Luckau.

Charan Vadlapati - 02.12.2025

Charan Vadlapati is a sustainability and ESG expert specializing in regulatory compliance, carbon accounting—including Scope 3 emissions—and non-financial reporting across global supply chains. As an ESG Business Analyst at AMCS, Charan brings deep expertise in aligning digital solutions with evolving regulatory frameworks such as the CSRD/ESRS, IFRS S1 and S2, EU-Taxonomy, EU CBAM, and LkSG.

With prior experience at IntegrityNext GmbH and GLOBAL CLIMATE GmbH, he has led the development of scalable ESG and carbon management tools, enabling organizations to navigate complex reporting requirements and accelerate their decarbonization journeys. His work focuses on translating regulatory complexity into actionable insights, particularly in Scope 3 emissions quantification and double materiality assessments. Charan is passionate about cross-functional collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and leveraging sustainability as a driver for innovation and business growth.

His talk would focus on how companies calculate carbon emissions.

Tasneem Balasinorwala; Diya Deb - 08.12.2025

Tasneem Balasinorwala is an Indian professional based in Berlin, Germany, with over 20 years of experience in the civil society sector at local, national, and international levels. Her work spans a wide range of themes, including biodiversity, integrity and governance, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), urban development, and development cooperation. She is the co-founder of PowerSouth and works as a programme manager with Karuna Deutschland e.V., working on a range of topics within the themes of gender equality and climate. 

Tasneem’s unique perspective comes from her ability to bridge global policy frameworks with on-the-ground practice, drawing from her extensive work with diverse stakeholders across sectors and geographies. Driven by curiosity and an entrepreneurial mindset, Tasneem believes that: “Addressing wicked problems needs an open mindset, inquisitive nature, and an entrepreneurial spirit.”

Diya Deb is a seasoned nonprofit strategist and social impact leader, currently based in Berlin,  with two decades of experience in both grassroots and strategic roles across India and internationally. She is the co-founder of PowerSouth, an initiative dedicated to amplifying women’s leadership in climate and development projects, and serves as the Executive Director of Mindworks Lab, a global cognitive science innovation lab to address climate challenges. 

Throughout her career, Diya has held leadership positions at both domestic and international organizations, with her work spanning diverse issues of human rights, gender, climate action, and sustainability, with a particular focus on integrating gender perspectives into campaigns and projects.

At PowerSouth, Diya applies her expertise to embed gender equality into climate and local development initiatives, especially within carbon markets. She is passionate about turning research and insights into actionable strategies, fostering partnerships, and amplifying local voices to ensure women are not just beneficiaries, but active leaders and co-creators of sustainable solutions.

Elisabeth Korinth - 12.01.2026

Elisabeth Korinth is currently working at the Senate Department for Urban Planning, Building, and Housing. As the officer responsible for UNESCO World Heritage at the Supreme Heritage Authority, she oversees ministerial affairs related to the protection and management of Berlin´s three UNESCO World Heritage sites. Her responsibilities include projects and initiatives aligned with the strategic objectives of the United Nations and UNESCO as its specialized agency. In this context, Ms. Korinth has led processes related to the Policy Document on Climate Action for World Heritage and the development of climate adaptation strategies for designated areas in Berlin protected under the World Heritage Convention. Projects are conducted in close collaboration with the relevant district park authority, the Berlin Forestry Agency, the Berlin Heritage Authority, and the departments for nature and species protection within the Senate Department for Urban Mobility, Transport, Climate Action, and the Environment.

Her lecture will focus on the complexity of climate action within a multilayered UNESCO World Heritage site that is (1) protected under various other national and EU regulations and (2) is governed by multiple authorities with different disciplinary approaches. In her talk, she will also briefly touch upon the UN SDGs 3, 11, and 15.
