Artificial hip and knee joint replacement - indication, frequency, influencing factors

Artificial hip and knee joint replacements are among the most frequently performed inpatient surgical procedures in Germany and have high socio-medical relevance due to the suffering of those affected by a joint disease.

In addition to partly contradictory figures on frequency in international comparison, there are different regional rates of care. In addition to the current lack of generally accepted indication criteria, patient-related and economic factors may play a role. On the basis of the current care situation in Germany as well as worldwide comparative data, these influencing factors will be discussed and current initiatives for the standardization of indication will be presented.
