CTran | App-based Evaluation of Service Innovations in Local Public Transport in Lignite Regions

Structural change in Lusatia is leading to changes in the mobility needs of the local population. At the same time, an attractive mobility offer has the potential to positively influence the influx of qualified employees. In addition to saving CO2 emissions, the switch from private cars to public transportation has other advantages in terms of traffic safety, time savings due to the possibility of actively using travel time or travel costs. However, this switch poses challenges for people, especially in rural areas. In the CTran project, we want to design innovative and demand-oriented mobility offers. In addition, possible incentives for a switch from car to public transport and the designed mobility offers will be identified and evaluated with the help of the app Wohin-Du-Willst (Deutsche Bahn).

The mobility app Wohin-Du-Willst is used in our project to anonymously collect data on the mobility behavior of users, track their routes using GPS, and evaluate potential public transport alternatives. In addition to information on the duration of the journey, the number of changes and the price, the app users also receive further information such as the CO2 emissions of the selected route.

The project team consists of DLR - Institute of Transport Research, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus - Senftenberg, DB Regio Bus Ost GmbH, DB Spree-Neiße-Bus and DB Regio Bus as the provider of the Wohin-Du-Willst app.

Project status

The project team is currently working on a version of the app that is adapted to the region and the project. Interested Lusatians can get involved in the research project in user workshops starting in October 2022. The app will then be released in spring 2023, giving all participants the opportunity to make a strong case for their region.
