From Lusatia to Australia: a dialogue on structural change and innovation

International Perspectives on Structural Change

From 20 to 22 September 2026, an Australian delegation visited Lusatia. The visit focused on structural change, innovative technologies and the question of how former coal regions can develop into sustainable centres of economic activity and innovation.

Lusatia is in the midst of this transformation process. With new research and innovation structures, opportunities are emerging in the region for science, business and society. International exchange with regions facing similar challenges offers the opportunity to share experiences and learn from one another.

Lausitz Science Park presented at the networking evening

One item on the agenda for the delegation’s visit was the networking evening on 21 September at the Dieselkraftwerk Cottbus. There, the international guests met with representatives from the worlds of business and science.

Dr Markus Schwenke, project manager of the Lausitz Science Park, presented the project to the international guests and provided insights into the development of Cottbus as a centre for science and innovation. In doing so, he highlighted the role the Lausitz Science Park is set to play in connecting science, research, innovation and business in the region.

Discussions on shared challenges and opportunities

The networking evening provided an opportunity to gain different perspectives on transformation processes, exchange experiences and forge new international contacts. For regions undergoing change in particular, such encounters can provide important impetus for future collaborations and joint innovation projects.
