  • Regular study duration: 3 years
  • Start: Winter semester
  • Graduation: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)

The turnaround in energy and raw materials calls for new materials to promote resource- and energy-efficient applications and processes. Consider, for example, the changes in lighting technology: ten years ago, we used conventional incandescent lamps, followed by energy-saving lamps five years later. In the meantime, almost only economical and long-life LED luminaires are in use. The composition of materials for modern energy storage systems, building materials or lightweight construction undergo a similarly rapid change. Moreover, we nowadays try to replace fossil raw materials and to produce new, near-natural materials in an energy- and environmentally friendly way. These innovative materials must first be composed of molecular building blocks. Various disciplines from the natural and engineering sciences, Chemistry in particular, are working together to create ready-to-use materials starting from the molecule.

Aiming at a modern and joined-up education of young natural scientists and engineers, the new consecutive course of study "Material Chemistry" will therefore start in autumn 2018 at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

The Bachelor's programme includes:

  • basic training in mathematics and physics;
  • Fundamentals in all chemical core subjects, i.e. inorganic, organic and physical chemistry;
  • an in-depth training in the subjects of chemical and physical materials research;
  • engineering fundamentals and applications related to the production of materials;
  • Acquisition of competence in scientific work, communication and presentation.

Upon successful completion of your studies, you will receive the degree "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)". This enables you to prepare yourself for a research-oriented career in four semesters in our subsequent consecutive Master's programme in Materials Chemistry. The Master of Science degree entitles the holder to a doctorate at a university worldwide.
