Lusatian bridge building competition with strong participation

On Thursday, December 14, starting at 4 p.m., students and pupils will take part in the Lusatian Bridge Building Competition - the traditional student competition in Mechanical Engineering, which will be held at the Konrad Zuse Media Center at the BTU in Senftenberg - with their self-constructed structures. Spectators are very welcome.

As the bridge-building competition is taking place at the same time as the tenth student Christmas market set up in front of the media center, there is an opportunity to combine visits to both events.

" Which bridge is particularly strong and light?" - This year, a particularly large number of BTU students from the Cottbus and Senftenberg campuses and, once again, pupils from the Georg Heinsius von Mayenburg School in the Senftenberg district of Brieske will be asking themselves this question. Of the 17 registered bridges, ten come from Mechanical Engineering alone, with others from Medical Engineering and the Orientation Studies Programme, as well as Tim Leuschner, a graduate of the Mechanical Engineering study programme, who has already won the competition twice and is competing again with a bridge model.

In the Mechanical Engineering  bridge-building competition, the aim is to construct a bridge from a maximum of 250 ice cream sticks, 20 meters of parcel string and wood glue that carries as much load as possible with as little dead weight as possible. The bridge models of the participating teams are tested alternately and under the same conditions on a specially developed test stand and loaded until they break.

The student bridge construction competition is once again being organized under the direction of Prof. Dr. Sylvio Simon and Prof. Dr. Matthias Ziegenhorn by teaching and research fellow Stephan Hernschier and Michael Weist from the Construction Engineering working group.
The winning teams will receive prizes - provided by regional companies - and certificates. The Institute for Environmental Technology and Recycling Senftenberg e.V. (IURS)  supports the competition.
