Lusatian bridge building competition

With their self-constructed structures, students and pupils take part in the Lusatian Bridge Building Competition - the traditional student competition in Mechanical Engineering, which is held at the Konrad Zuse Media Centre at the BTU in Senftenberg. Spectators are very welcome.

As the bridge-building competition was held at the same time as the Student Christmas Market in front of the Media Centre, there is an opportunity to combine visits to both events.

"Which bridge is particularly strong and light?" - This year, many BTU students from the Cottbus and Senftenberg campuses as well as pupils from the Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium Senftenberg and the Georg Heinsius von Mayenburg School in the Senftenberg district of Brieske will be asking themselves this question.

In the Mechanical Engineering  bridge-building competition, the aim is to construct a bridge from a maximum of 250 ice cream sticks, 20 metres of parcel string and wood glue that can carry as much load as possible with as little dead weight as possible. The bridge models of the participating teams are tested alternately and under the same conditions on a specially developed test rig and loaded until they break.

The student bridge building competition is once again being organised under the direction of Prof. Dr Sylvio Simon and Prof. Dr Matthias Ziegenhorn by teaching and research fellow Stephan Hernschier and Michael Weist from the Tool Making Machines chair.
The winning teams will receive prizes - provided by regional companies - and certificates. The Institute for Environmental Technology and Recycling Senftenberg e.V. (IURS) supports the competition.
