Successful graduates celebrate first bachelor's degree in midwifery science at BTU

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) has held a graduation ceremony for the first graduates of the Bachelor's degree programme in Midwifery Science in the state of Brandenburg. From now on, 13 specialists with excellent academic qualifications are ready to fulfil their diverse tasks in the field of midwifery in the region.

The successful graduation ceremony and certificate presentation marks an important milestone for the university and the graduates, who received their Bachelor's certificates at the end of March 2025 at BTU in Senftenberg and proudly celebrated the successful completion of their challenging degree programme. The study programme, which was launched at BTU for the first time in the winter semester 2021/22 with the support and guidance of the Brandenburg Ministry of Health and Science with 16 students, combines midwifery science knowledge with practical training in the regional delivery rooms and provides optimal preparation for the future profession.

As trailblazers for future years, the graduates took on the challenges of the newly reformed midwifery training programme with a pioneering spirit. From 1 April 2025, they will be the first to go out into the world as academically trained midwives with a Bachelor of Science degree. Behind them lie seven exciting and thrilling semesters - with countless hours of theoretical learning, compulsory internships, in the delivery room, the maternity ward, the paediatric ward in the cooperation hospitals in Brandenburg and in the non-clinical time working with freelance midwives.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat.Franziska Rosenlöcher, Head of the Midwifery Science study programme, emphasises: "We would like to take this opportunity to thank our partner hospitals, the Medical University of Lausitz - Carl Thiem, the Klinikum Dahme Spreewald, the Achenbach Hospital Königs Wusterhausen site and the Spreewaldklinik Lübben site, the Klinikum Ernst von Bergmann Potsdam, the Klinikum Frankfurt (Oder) and the Sana Kliniken Niederlausitz - Klinikbereich Lauchhammer for providing the practice places. We would like to thank all the supervisors and midwives who looked after the students competently and empathetically with a great deal of commitment and patience during their clinical and non-clinical time."

Having successfully completed their bachelor's degree, the young midwives are ideally equipped to start their careers and make an important contribution to the health of women and families. The graduates will accompany the beginning of life, they will provide security and confidence in the most exciting moments of a human life, birth. However, they are not only professionals, but also companions, encouragers, advocates and protectors of pregnant women, women giving birth, women who have recently given birth and newborn babies.

"The midwifery profession is and remains a very special one," emphasises Prof. Franziska Rosenlöcher. "Especially at a time when obstetrics is facing major challenges, we need committed, intelligent and empathetic midwives who are passionate about their profession with knowledge and heart."

At the graduation ceremony, the course director praised the achievements of the graduates and emphasised the growing importance of academically trained midwives for high-quality and evidence-based obstetrics: "Take this graduation today as a sign of your skills and as a mandate to remain curious, to continue your education, to work for women, families and good obstetrics in delivery rooms, on maternity wards, in prenatal care, in freelance work or as a family midwife. Some of you will continue your studies and pursue other paths. I look forward to seeing you again - in the delivery rooms, for practical support or for joint examinations. There are many areas of work where midwives are needed. You have laid the foundations - now it is up to you to continue on this path with passion and joy. It is a graduation and a beginning."

In their speeches, the graduates also looked back on their periods of study and thanked the teaching staff for their dedicated supervision and sound training.
The ceremony was accompanied by piano pieces by Ludovico Einaudi and offered the graduates, their families, friends and the teaching staff at the Institute of Health the opportunity to exchange ideas and share their joy at the success they had achieved.

BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg congratulates the first graduates of the midwifery degree programme and wishes them all the best for their future careers.

Following the successful first year of the Midwifery Science study programme, 47 students from 2022 to 2024 are currently completing their primary qualifying midwifery degree and, since autumn 2024, five legally qualified midwives have been completing the post-qualification course in Midwifery Science (Bachelor of Science) at BTU.
