Presentation of impromptu designs for street furniture in Guben

September 19th 2024

Master's students from the departments of Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg were in Guben for the third time in the summer semester of 2024. As part of the impromptu programme at the Department of Urban Design and Urban Studies, they looked at spaces for young people and street furniture. After an initial exploration of the city in May and a joint inspection and mapping of everyday spaces with students in July, the presentation, discussion and competition for the resulting designs took place on 19 September at the Obersprucke cultural centre.

The aim of the designs was to create street furniture that improves the quality of stay in the everyday spaces explored by young people in Guben. The concepts were to be developed with the needs and wishes of the young people in mind and offer multifunctional and transportable solutions that combine aesthetics, ergonomics and robustness.

The students presented their designs, which were then critically evaluated by the pupils on the geography course at Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Guben. Advantages and disadvantages as well as possible improvements were discussed. The best designs were selected by a jury made up of the young people, experts from Guben city council, the architecture and engineering firm Bartke & Neumann in Guben, the planning office Form Follows You from Berlin and lecturers from the Urban Design and Urban Studies department at BTU.

The winning designs will be further developed for realisation by the Smart City project of the city of Guben, funded by the BMWSB. In spring 2025, these are to be realised together with the young people as part of a timber construction workshop.

Mapping everyday spaces with young people and students in Guben

July3rd2024 in Guben

As part of an impromptu module in the summer semester of 2024, a joint working day took place in the twin city at the Neiße in cooperation with the Smart City project Guben and the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium. The aim was to get to know spaces and spatial qualities as well as to record wishes, needs and conflicts in direct cooperation with the users of these spaces.

The joint start took place in the school auditorium with the 20 pupils from the advanced geography course and the 15 students from the Master degree programmes in Architecture and Urban and Regional Planning getting to know each other. The methodology and task were introduced before the joint work phase in small groups, consisting of pupils and students, began. The mapping was carried out as cooperative research and design work to prepare the development of street furniture.

The first results were presented in a final round on the Museum Island on the Neiße. Seven groups explored parks, playgrounds and sports fields, the banks of the Neiße, the city centre and the Sprucke housing estate. The students are continuing to work with the results. The collaboration will continue with a timber construction workshop in September, in which both students and pupils will take part.

The Conference and training „Utopia Kulturelle Bildung“ explores the potential of aesthetic and utopian practice in transformation processes in Lusatia. In the face of pressing crises, ideas for alternatives and methods are needed to accompany the upcoming change.

Cultural education promotes co-design and participation through educational programs and self-education with creative and artistic media. How can cultural education, art and culture support bottom-up processes in the transformation region? What role do utopias from the arts, digital pioneers and cultural education events with art and media play here?
