Prospects for dual study programs in Brandenburg

Current developments, needs and opportunities for securing academic specialists are the focus of the Regional Forum Dual Studies, to which the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) invites on Thursday, June 16, 2022, on its central campus Cottbus.

Under the central theme "Prospects for dual study programs in Brandenburg", stakeholders from Brandenburg's universities will discuss the potential of dual study programs for securing the state's skilled workforce together with their cooperation partners in the companies and with representatives from business, education and politics. In addition to the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, the Technical University of Wildau, the Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences, the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam and the University of Applied Sciences for Sustainable Development Eberswalde will also be represented at the event in the exhibition tent at the forum.

"Organizing a statewide personal exchange with stakeholders from all areas of dual studies is an exciting thing for us: this is where all the players* come together, who ultimately act together in practice to achieve a high level of academic success," explains Prof. Dr. Peer Schmidt, Vice President for Studies and Teaching at BTU. "Interest in dual studies is growing steadily, and so we will also welcome a number of new faces at the Regional Forum. I'm looking forward to the large number of guests from different areas and am very excited about the results of the exchange."

In the form of keynote speeches, participants will gain a deeper insight and background information on dual studies. For example, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kathrin Lehmann, project manager for dual studies at the BTU, has entitled her talk "The path to university-based dual study programs at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg." Dr. Nicolas Reum from the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) will highlight development trends in dual study programs. Sven Weickert, managing director of the Vereinigung der Unternehmensverbände in Berlin und Brandenburg e.V., will address the needs of the business community. At the subsequent World Café, participants will have their say and can actively contribute to the further development of dual study programs.

Background:

BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg offers dual study programs in engineering and business administration in cooperation with over 180 regional and national companies. Currently, a total of 82 vacant dual study places are available in civil engineering, business administration, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and industrial engineering. The next dual study program in medical engineering* will start in the winter semester of 2022/2023. Interested parties can already apply for the offers now.

The BTU's dual study program includes two models. In the training-integrated model, vocational training is linked to the degree program, and dual students receive two full-fledged degrees - the vocational degree and the university's academic degree. In the practice-integrated model, practical phases are integrated into the lecture-free periods of the course of study, which are coordinated jointly with the dual students, those responsible in the companies and the lecturers at the university. In addition, the university offers further dual study programs in nursing science and therapeutic science at the Institute of Health.
