Exhibition "Border Violence and the Viadrina in the 1990s".

The exhibition "GrenzGewalt und die Viadrina in den 1990er Jahren" (Border Violence and the Viadrina in the 1990s) deals with the racist and right-wing attacks after the opening of the border between Poland and the FRG.

The exhibition "Border Violence in the 1990s" is the result of a three-semester seminar at the European University Viadrina. The student research and reflections focused on incidents of racist violence that occurred in the course of the opening of the border between Poland and the FRG. A time that has become known as the "baseball bat years" and the extreme right-wing acts of violence that this refers to. In particular, the exhibition sheds light on the experiences of violence and discrimination that students and employees of the university, which was newly founded in 1991, had and the reactions to them within the institution. How did the young university position itself in relation to these incidents? How were they reported? What were the reactions on the part of the students?

We are pleased to be able to show the exhibition in the foyer of House 10 at the Sachsendorf Campus until the end of the lecture period as part of the Graduate College of Health and Social Professions of Faculty 4.

Opening of the exhibition 07.12.2022 at 12:30 in the foyer of house 10

The opening of the exhibition will be accompanied by a short supporting program. The organizers of the exhibition, Maria Klessmann, Ronja Kroll, Florian Grundmüller and Georg Hartmann from Viadrina Frankfurt/Oder, will talk about the research results and their experiences during the research at their university. Joschka Fröschner speaks for Opferperspektive, counseling center for victims of right-wing violence, on the situation of victims of right-wing violence in the 1990s. In addition, the initiative Cottbus '92 reports on extreme right-wing violence at that time in Cottbus, especially in Sachsendorf.
