Lecture Series: Technology and Environment / The Energy Transition, a Contested Terrain - Perspectives from Law and Politics

In the lectures of the lecture series "Technology and Environment - (K)EIN WIDERSPRUCH?(!)" technology and environment are not discussed as opposites but as complementary and mutually generating. In the lecture series on May 11, 2023, the topic "The energy transition, a controversial terrain - perspectives from law and politics" will be discussed and debated.

Problems such as worldwide environmental pollution and species extinction, climate change and extractivism in the global South, ubiquitous plastic waste and urban sprawl have been and continue to be generated by technical products and industrial modes of production. At the same time, however, the solution to these problems is also expected to be made possible by an extensive mechanization of society, the landscape, and its resources. In recent years, there has accordingly been a fundamental shift, including a political one, in the understanding of technology and the environment in science and society. The environmental sciences have been joined by the environmental humanities, and the innovative potential of eco-technologies has been examined and tested in technical and cultural studies. In this lecture series, perspectives will be addressed that focus on current and historical constellations of technology and environment through projects on renewable energies and coal-fired power generation, on legal, cultural and aesthetic aspects of post-mining landscapes, and thus also on technology as culture.

The positions come from the history, philosophy and law of technology, from environmental and technical sociology, landscape architecture and industrial culture, as well as cultural studies.
