BTU Children's University: How can our wastewater be made clean again?

On Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. on the Campus Senftenberg of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), participants in the children's university will find out how cloudy wastewater becomes clean and clear again and which tiny creatures help with this.

Pupils from the third to sixth grades are invited to the 45-minute children's university lecture "How do we make our wastewater clean again?" in the large lecture theatre of the Konrad Zuse Media Center.

Our wastewater is disposed of almost invisibly and discreetly. Dr.-Ing. Andrea Straub from theBTU's Building Physics and Building Technology chair will explain why wastewater needs to be treated and how wastewater becomes clean again when it passes through the stages of the treatment plant. In order to get polluted water clean enough to be returned to the natural water cycle, many tanks and bacteria are needed to consume the nutrients it contains. Things get adventurous in such an "aeration tank". There is a real food chain there. In this children's university lecture, Dr.-Ing. Andrea Straub also shows how soap is broken down in wastewater and what should never go down the toilet.

The children's university lectures are designed to spark an interest in solving scientific problems at an early age and give children the opportunity to discover their own abilities and inclinations, as well as to "experience" the flair of a university.
The BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg gives schoolchildren from the third to sixth grades the opportunity to get a taste of university life and teaches solutions to everyday scientific phenomena in a child-friendly, exciting way. This stimulates formative experiences that awaken the youngest children's interest in science and reduce their inhibitions about university.
