Climate-neutral mobility on the car-free university day

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is once again taking part in the Germany-wide Car-Free University Day on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, from 11 am to 4 pm. All interested parties are invited to take part in a colorful hands-on program, meeting point: Cottbus main campus, Walther-Pauer-Straße 7, Interims-Mensa/FabLab area (garage complex).

A market of opportunities and a panel discussion on sustainable mobility in Cottbus and the region offer a variety of opportunities to get involved, gain new ideas and share experiences.

The aim of the day is to draw attention to the relevance of climate-neutral, environmentally friendly and socially just mobility. This year, the focus is on exchanging ideas on existing and future sustainable mobility. Under the question "How can the roads and paths of the future be designed at BTU?", the ideas competition "FutureRoads@BTU" was launched. The ideas and prototypes submitted will be presented on campus.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Market of Possibilities will flank the Car-Free University Day in front of the interim canteen at the FabLab, the open workshop for Cottbus and the surrounding area, which will be presenting itself here with many other groups. In addition to information stands from the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) and a pop-up self-help bicycle workshop, there will also be sustainable snacks and drinks on offer.

Panel discussion on sustainable mobility in Cottbus and the region

The event will conclude at 14:30 in the Lehmbau on Konrad-Wachsmann-Allee with a practical discussion on future planning for sustainable mobility in Cottbus and the region. Representatives from a wide range of transportation stakeholders in the region will discuss the question "Car-free - but how? - Opportunities and challenges of sustainable mobility in rural Lusatia" will be discussed. Questions and contributions from visitors are very welcome.

The panel guests are:

  • Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christine Eisenmann, BTU, Chair of Infrastructure and Mobility Planning
  • Ralf Thalmann, Manager Cottbusverkehr
  • Sven Koritkowski, Service Area Manager for Transport and Infrastructure Planning, City of Cottbus/Chóśebuz
  • Martin Wenzel, Verkehrsclub Deutschland (VCD) Brandenburg

The prizes for the FutureRoads@BTU ideas competition will also be awarded during the panel discussion.

The Car-Free University Day 2024 at BTU is being organized bystaff members from the Infrastructure and Mobility Planning and Sociology of Technology and the Environment chairs and from the Information, Communication and Media Centre (IKMZ). No roads will be closed off on BTU's main campus this year as part of the event. However, the organizing team would be delighted if this day could be taken as an opportunity to use alternatives to the car.
