"Why do we need a critical reminder of National Socialism today?"

Almost 80 years after the liberation from National Socialism, the question arises as to why the memory of this period is still important. Not only was the GDR one of three successor societies to the Nazi state, the after-effects of which are unmistakable to the present day. Many aspects of political life, education, health and justice or the public handling of the past in the Federal Republic can only be understood against the background of the unprecedented Nazi terror and its millions of victims. The lecture is dedicated to the question of why it is still necessary to deal critically with this period in the sense of a deliberate "self-disturbance" (Volkhard Knigge).

Dr. Enrico Heitzer is a research associate for the "Soviet Special Camp" at the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum / Brandenburg Memorials Foundation. He studied history and political science and was a scholarship holder of the state of Saxony-Anhalt and the German Historical Institute Washington. He completed his doctoral studies in 2014.

The lecture will take place at Spreekino Spremberg/Grodk from 5:30 - 7 pm. A 40 to max. 45-minute lecture is planned, followed by three quarters of an hour of discussion.
