Life journeys - Biographical stories about the decline of the GDR, German reunification and the subsequent transformation

Invitation to the lecture series in Spremberg/Grodk as part of the Science Year 2024 on the topic of "Freedom" Why we need a critical culture of remembrance for our future - a joint series of events by the BTU Presence Office of the State of Brandenburg and the town of Spremberg/Grodk

Life-historical experiences that are passed on play a central role in the current image of the political upheaval in the final phase of the GDR, German reunification and the subsequent transformation phase. There is often a dissonance between private family memories in East Germany and the public historical image of the Berlin Republic. The research project "Family Memory" (2019 to 2023) is dedicated to these topics. The presentation will outline the approach and summarize the results. Finally, further reflections on the conflictual relationship between private remembrance and public commemoration will be presented.

Dr. Patrice G. Poutrus holds a doctorate in history and currently works as a research assistant at the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück. His research focuses on the history of the GDR, the history of flight and asylum in post-war Germany and family memories in East Germany.
