Admission Requirements and Procedures
- The primary admissions requirement is a first qualifying degree (at least bachelor's degree) or a qualification equivalent degree in a program closely related to Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- A degree is considered to be closely related to AI if the topics studied as part of the bachelors degree are the similar in depth and range to those taken in BTU's bachelors degree in Artificial Intelligence.
- The program has a strong theoretical/mathematical component. Thus, success in our academic program requires that the bachelors degree contain a solid background in theoretical computer science, mathematics (with special focus on probability theory but also including discrete mathematics and number theory, analysis, linear algebra), machine learning, software engineering, and programming.
- Bachelors degrees that are often, but not always, considered to be closely related include computer science, computer engineering, or mathematics with a minor in computer science.
- The examination board of Artificial Intelligence at BTU will decide whether an applicant’s degree is sufficiently close in terms of content.
- Applicants need a certificate of proficiency in English as described in this handout.
Please note that the application periods change slightly from year to year, but are usually very similar to previous years.
Here are the next two application periods:
Summer Semester 2026
- for applicants with a foreign Master Entrance Qualification:
November 1, 2025 to January 15, 2026 (via uni-Assist) - for applicants with a German Master Entrance Qualification:
December 1, 2025 to March 1, 2026 (via myBTU) Winter Semester 2026/2027

- Applicants with a German higher education degree have to apply via BTU's Online Application Portal.
- International applicants have to apply via uni-assist. Uni-assist verifies applications on their credentials – it does not grant admissions. If the verification of uni-assist is successful, the application is forwarded to BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg where we evaluate the application with regards to the admission to our programme. A submission of application documents directly to the university is not possible.
- your fully completed and signed online application form (either BTU's Online Application Portal or uni-assist),
- a simple copy of a document proving the completion of a bachelor's or higher level degree including a transcripts of records/list of subjects taken (if the original is not in English or German, then you need a translation to English or German from a sworn translator),
- for applicants in their last bachelor's semester: you will need at least a document (including the already recorded grades) of your university, that you will finalise your studies before the start of our master's programme,
- a simple copy of the higher education entrance qualification (a translation to English or German from a sworn translator is required if the original is not in English or German),
- a concise up-to-date curriculum vitae with details about your educational history, lab experience, research interests, etc.,
- proof of English language skills (described in the handout, we do not accept "medium of instruction certificates", only valid certificates are recognized),
- for applicants with German entrance qualification (Abitur): Your certificate of higher education entrance qualification may also serve as sufficient proof – provided that you acquired your higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad and provided that your certificate of higher education entrance qualification demonstrates English language skills at least at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Questions about the Degree Program
You can find the most recent Exam and Study Regulations on this website, under the tab Detail Information >> Regulations & Catalog of Modules
You can find information about the individual module contents on the Course Catalogues directory of the BTU by selecting Master’s in Artificial Intelligence study programme.
No. Students decide on their own of how many Modules and the respective credits they take each semester. To finish your study within the regular 4 semesters, we would recommend to take 30 credits in each semester.
Yes, internship module is compulsory (mandatory) for AI programme. Except internship, all other modules are free electives divided into three complexes: Advanced Methods; Knowledge Acquisition, Representation, and Processing; Learning and Reasoning.
For each of the complexes, students have to have at least 6 credits. In case of Seminars or Laboratories, however, students choose between 6 and 12 credits.
Questions about Module, Moodle, Registration and Deregistration
You can find this information on the semester timetable, here.
A module is a complete block with thematically defined outcome, given workload (credit points) and clear evaluation criteria. A module can consist of one or more courses and one or more examinations (credits and/or subject examinations). However, a typical module usually consists of a lecture, exercise sessions (übungs), and an exam. For information on registration and deregistration of modules, please check the Registrar’s Office website.
Moodle is an e-learning management platform of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. You log in with the BTU Account. More information on the Moodle can be found here.
