DLR Institute for Research on Low-emission Aerospace Engines

The Senate of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) founded an Institute of Low-emission Aerospace Engines in Cottbus at the beginning of July 2020. See the corresponding press release (in German).

Centre for Hybrid Electric Systems

In July 2019, Rolls-Royce had signed a letter of intent with the State of Brandenburg to research technologies for future hybrid-electric aircraft engines. The focus of research activities will be at BTU. The establishment of a centre for hybrid-electric systems is currently being prepared for this purpose. In addition to a scientific facility, this centre will include an extensive test centre and a facility for the rapid production of all necessary components using state-of-the-art production methods. This centre will be designed open to systems and will also be available to other interested research partners. The UTC chairs will significantly contribute and support the centre with their competences in various areas.

Virtual Engine (Virtuelles Triebwerk (VIT)) - Part 6

Currently, plans are being made for Part 6 as a successor programme to the currently running VIT-V of the "Virtual Engine" (VIT) programme. Since 2003, BTU scientists have been working very successfully in the VIT projects on the development of analysis and design processes to improve the efficiency of engines.

More activities

The research work is closely linked to other activities in the area of regional development and teaching.
For example, initiated by an innovation forum on aircraft engine technology funded by the BMBF, the "Network Initiative on Engine Technology" was founded, which is headed by the BTU. Research institutions, engine manufacturers and SMEs work together in this network to promote the development of the Brandenburg/Berlin region as Aviation Region III.

Furthermore, UTC members are involved in projects that deal with accompanying the structural change process in Lusatia, for example within the "Lausitzer Zentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz (LZKI)" (Lusatian Centre for Artificial Intelligence).

Since 2003, there has been a course of study in aero-engine technology, which is unique in Germany, in which a significant proportion of the application-oriented courses are taught by external experts with the substantial involvement of Rolls-Royce and non-university research institutions.

The interaction of research - teaching - regional development in this form is a unique selling point and the BTU is thus also strategically well positioned in this area.
