Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary science that brings together a wide range of disciplines in the natural sciences, such as microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, bioinformatics and engineering. This is also lived here at the Senftenberg campus. Scientific solutions for problems in the two main focal points are developed on an interdisciplinary basis: Molecular and cell-based Diagnostics and Therapy as well as Applied Microbiology.

Since 2000, biotechnology can be studied in Senftenberg. The excellent development of this field of study favoured the planning and implementation of an own biotechnology building, which can be used since 2007. The Institute of Biotechnology has well-equipped laboratories, seminar rooms and PC pools at its disposal, which are used by scientists* and students alike. On the ground floor there are large laboratories for the basic training of students in the Bachelor's programme. Research laboratories, which are equipped according to the subject area, and function rooms, which contain devices for common use, extend over two further floors.
