Research

At the Institute of Biotechnology our research focus covers special topics in Biomedicine & Bioeconomy. These led to technology competences in e.g. metabolic profiling, data processing tools, in vitro cell and tissue models, cell-free protein synthesis, BCCU etc. Institute’s research strength is demonstrated by constant third-party funding via DFG, BMBF and EU.
To find out more about the individual research areas, it is worth visiting the pages of the individual research groups of the Institute.
The institute's mission is to further develop the Senftenberg campus into a leading biotechnology location supporting sustainable industrial transformation & decarbonization of the former coal-mining region. Biotechnology processes are the basis for medical products, bio-based chemicals, materials and specialty products for pharmaceutical-, chemical- and food industry. Bio-based developments create innovations that help mitigate global warming, strengthen domestic industry, agriculture and forestry, and provide opportunities to create value on a broader basis.
The Institute initiated a new innovation campus, i.e. the Biotech-Health Campus Lausitz (BioH) being part of the Lausitz Science Park. Research Groups interact with Institutes of Helmholtz- and Fraunhofer Society and with life science companies.

The excellent infrastructure of the Institute of Biotechnology offers further associated institutes and research group’s space for scientific work.
