Orthoses from the 3D printer - Pupils' university provides insights into medical technology

On Saturday, April 13, 2024, from 12:30 to 2 p.m., pupils in grades 7 to 13 will learn how to create orthoses in a hands-on workshop at the BTU in Senftenberg.

There are still a few places left for this event at the Konrad Zuse Media Center at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) on the subject of medical technology. Those interested have the opportunity to register by e-mail at schueleruni(at)b-tu.de for registration. At the BTU in Senftenberg, there is also the possibility of enrolling on the Bachelor's degree course in Medical Engineering study program.

Orthoses are medical aids that enclose or stabilize body parts and are used in orthopaedics in particular. Orthoses produced using additive manufacturing, i.e. 3D printing, are a modern alternative to conventional orthoses or plaster casts. They can be adapted precisely to the patient, are easy to use and can be produced using a simple 3D printer. A 3D scanner can assist in the creation of the digital model. The scan of the body part serves as the basis for creating the 3D model. This can simply be printed out after completion and is immediately ready for use.

Under the guidance of teaching and research fellow Stephan Hernschier, the participants in the Student University workshop look at the steps involved in creating an orthosis. To do this, 3D scans are carried out and the scan data is then transferred to a 3D model in CAD software to create a 3D printable component.

Pupils from third to sixth grade are invited to the Konrad Zuse Media Center on Campus Senftenberg on Saturday, April 13, at 11 am. Prof. Dr. Michael Schierack - specialist in orthopaedics, specialist in trauma surgery and honorary professorship at BTU - will then give the children's university lecture "What makes (competitive) athletes recover so quickly?" For registration please send an e-mail to kinderuni(at)b-tu.de are requested.
