Lusatian perspectives on hydrogen in the energy transition
- Panel discussion "Local fairy tales - global dependencies? Critical perspectives on hydrogen as a beacon of hope for the energy transition" on Wednesday, July 3, 2024
- FUTURE TALK "What role should hydrogen play in the Lusatian energy transition?" on Wednesday, July 10, 2024
Is hydrogen the new coal of Lusatia or rather the new import oil of the energy region? At the event on Wednesday, 3 July 2024, Markus Will from the Zittau-Görlitz University of Applied Sciences, Institute for Transformation, Housing and Social Spatial Design and Dr. Lasse Thiele from Konzeptwerk neue Ökonomie will discuss the local Lusatian perspectives and the global justice aspects of hydrogen.
While hydrogen is often discussed in Lusatia as the new coal, on a global level it has more in common with the hype surrounding a new oil rush: the majority of hydrogen in Germany is to be imported from abroad in the future. But what does this mean for the exporting countries? - The two officers Markus Will and Lasse Thiele will provide local and global insights into a critical examination of hydrogen as a beacon of hope for the energy transition. Lusatian perspectives are contrasted with global aspects of justice. The discussion will focus on how both perspectives are connected and how a differentiated approach to hydrogen as part of an energy transition can look. Interested parties are cordially invited to attend.

The final event in the series will focus on green hydrogen as a promising key element in the pursuit of renewable energy solutions. The potential of hydrogen to decarbonize various sectors - from mobility to industrial processes - offers an enticing path to a greener future. However, the successful implementation of a green H2 economy will require a great deal of green electricity from renewable energy sources and the construction of new infrastructure.
In Lusatia, hydrogen is also expected to play a relevant role in the local economy and energy supply. Discussed by some as the "new green coal", it is described by others as the "champagne of energy", which should only be used in sectors where electrification is not possible. In this contrasting situation, the question arises as to what role hydrogen should play in a socio-ecological transformation.
