BTU student Michael Ryan Blackmore wins first prize in the ICOMOS Student Competition 2023

Michael Ryan Blackmore is in his third semester of the online Master's degree course in World Heritage Studies (WHS) at the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). The US-born student took part in the 2023 ICOMOS student competition on the topic of "1960+ / Pleas for the preservation of postmodern buildings" and is one of the winners.

The poster by Michael Ryan Blackmore shows a collage of a former bus shelter that has been converted into a café in Portland (Oregon, USA). Notes and descriptions were used to analyze how this bus shelter qualifies as a postmodern building in terms of its form, function and special features. Michael Ryan Blackmore also investigated the significance of the building in its surroundings. He also looked at the current and prospective efforts to preserve it. Michael Ryan Blackmore's work was selected by the ICOMOS jury for one of the four 1st prizes, each endowed with 1,000 euros. The award ceremony took place in Stuttgart on January 23, 2024.

The poster submitted for the competition was developed in the summer semester of 2023 in a seminar led by Prof. Johanna Blokker(Field of Study: Architectural Conservation), Dr. Britta Rudolff(Field of Study: Heritage Management) and Jacopo Spinelli(Chair: Architecture and Visualization) in the English-language WHS Master's course (online ).

A good 60 student entries from around 20 universities from six countries (Germany, Australia, Belgium, Italy, Portugal and Switzerland) were submitted for the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) student competition. Four entries from the competition were awarded first prize and four were awarded second prize. The prize money was provided by the Wüstenrot Foundation. The competition was aimed in particular at students of Architecture, Urban Planning, History of Art, Archaeology and Restoration and other monument conservation disciplines. The aim of the task was to take an in-depth look at the architectural and urban planning heritage of postmodernism. The aim was not only to call for the protection of postmodernist annexes, but also to critically analyze and evaluate measures that have been taken or to make precise proposals for protection and conservation renewal.
