Individual Doctorate

At the beginning of your doctoral project, you will need to select a dissertation topic and find one or more supervisors to support you throughout your studies in terms of subject matter, methodology and organisation. Ideally, the search for a supervisor and a topic should go hand in hand.

If you are pursuing a doctoral degree in an application-oriented chair, it may be necessary to consult a second university professor from a relevant chair as an additional supervisor. Please enquire about this with your chosen supervisor or the relevant faculty.

How and where do I apply for admission as a doctoral candidate?

In order to apply for admission as a doctoral candidate at the faculty, you will require confirmation of supervision from a university professor authorised to supervise doctoral candidates. The confirmation of supervision specifically documents the supervisor's agreement with the topic of the doctoral thesis and their willingness to supervise the project.
It is your responsibility to find your own supervisor. Please use the faculty websites to search for suitable chairs and contact potential supervisors.

What application documents do I need to submit?

The admission procedure and deadlines are set by the faculty at which you wish to do your doctorate. The documents listed below serve as a guideline; you may have to submit additional documents according to the doctoral regulations of the faculty that applies to you.

What happens next with my application?

1. German citizens and EU citizens with a German university degree

The faculty will decide on your application for admission as a doctoral candidate and inform you of the outcome. If you receive a positive decision, you may enrol as a doctoral student if you wish. In this case, the faculty will forward your documents to the Admissions and Registrar's Office for the next steps. A doctorate is also possible without official enrolment at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.
