Learning Outcome:The objective is to give an overview of organismic, cellular, and molecular biology in order to enable students to understand life processes in their basic lines from the molecular to the organismic level, to enable students to handle selected biological methods, to enable students to explain life processes and biological methods in adequate scientific language, and to enable students to use scientific literature. Students will be able
  • to understand and explain the basic principles of the lecture topics,
  • to work with microscopes under bright field, dark field and phase contrast conditions,
  • to explain selected methods in the field of organismic, molecular, and cellular biology,
  • to find and work with scientific sources concerning current biological knowledge.
Contents:Part 1: Lecture
  • Cells – the basic units of life (molecules)
  • Cells – the basic units of life (compartments and structures)
  • Organismic organisation and biodiversity
  • Basic principles in genetics and molecular biology
  • Energy, enzymes, and metabolism
  • Land plants / vascular plants
  • Animals: immunology, development, and physiology
Part 2: Practical Training
  • Light microscopy, basic techniques
  • Advanced microscopical techniques (staining, counting)
  • Determination of animals
  • Plant anatomy and physiology
  • Cell growth
  • Mitosis
  • Parasites
  • Animal preparation (cockroach)
Recommended Prerequisites:Basic knowledge in natural sciences (biology, chemistry, physics) is strongly recommended!

Teaching Materials and Literature:Lectures and practical exercises can be offered as classroom teaching or online via digital formats. The decision is up to the module supervisor. He will make a prompt decision based on the current situation.
Students will acquire the general principles through the lecture. By means of the lecture notes and relevant textbooks, a self-directed continuous study is necessary. In the practical exercises, students have to work with course microscopes and other selected methods. Multimedia presentations (e.g., videos) support some of the topics in lecture and practical exercises. Copies of relevant literature can be found in the library ("Semesterapparat").
