Research focus

The professorship conducts research in the field of mixed-integer linear and non-linear numerical optimisation. Exact methods are used to solve optimisation problems, which, in addition to admissible solutions, provide a statement regarding their quality and ideally provide proof of global optimality. In addition, heuristic methods are used. Where established methods fail, they are adapted and improved in order to expand their range of applications. In cooperation with partners from industry, business and science, current optimisation issues are identified and formulated as algebraic models.

Mathematics, economics and engineering students are familiarised with the theoretical foundations of the methods in seminars on the general principles of mathematics, optimisation and operations research. Teaching the use of computer-based modelling and solution tools is a further focus. The aim is to train students to become critical users and developers.
