General Information

The full PhD scholarship provides funding to pursue a doctorate. Only candidates can apply for the scholarship. The basic amount of the scholarship is 1,500 euros per month. If you have children and they live in the same household, the GRS can offer a monthly family allowance of 150 euros per child. There is no legal entitlement for being awarded a scholarship.

Eligibility

Full scholarships of up to 36 months will be awarded to pursue a PhD or doctorate at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. You can receive the scholarship from January 2022 onwards at the earliest. Your funding may also start later. Eligible for funding are only BTU doctoral/PhD students. If you are currently applying for a PhD or doctorate at BTU you need to provide at least a letter of acceptance from your supervisor.

The applicant for the scholarship is the doctoral/PhD student. The scholarship will be awarded on an individual basis, and therefore the supervisor cannot apply for it like for a research project. Applicants shall be involved at the supervisor’s chair at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg; i.e. the supervisor should provide the necessary facilities to conduct the research project.

The requirements for the cholarships are: a university degree, competence, and motivation as well as an excellent track record.

The call for applications is open to projects from all academic/scientific disciplines at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

Important information for applicants from 2020: If your last application for the GradV Full Scholarship was not successful, the members of the Awarding-Commission will not consider your reapplication.

  9. If applicable, copy of confirmation from municipal family office »Familienkasse« (may be submitted later)
  10. Letter of recommendation** of first supervisor (BTU university professor), and second letter of recommendation by another university professor (BTU or external)

Do not submit any additional documents that are not required (for example, medical records). The selection will be based on the application documents mentioned above. We retain the right to reject your application if you provide additional documents with sensitive and/or personal data (for example, medical certificate).

  • 4-6 pp. max.
  • Cover page (name, supervisor(s), chair, faculty, working title, start date of doctorate)
  • Overview of research area (background of the problem, summary of state-of-the-art, research gaps and your scope)
  • Research question(s) and objective(s)
  • Originality and relevance of your topic
  • Methodology 
  • Tentative working plan until submission (use Gannt chart)
  • Selective research bibliography

** Tips letter of recommendation:

  • 2 pp. max. (German or English)
  • How do you know the applicant?
  • How do you assess the applicant's subject knowledge?
  • How do you assess the originality and relevance of the research topic?
  • Does the applicant possess any other relevant qualifications for the project? If yes, why are they imporant?
  • If applicable, also mention any noteworthy achievements by the applicant (for example, achievements in previous studies).

Remember that the proposal and letters of recommendation should also be understandable for non-experts. 

Submission of the Application

Please submit your complete application in a single PDF file in the order indicated above until 28 September 2021 (12:00 noon CEST) via email to the GRS: researchschool(at)b-tu.de (Subject: Application PhD Scholarship)

Incomplete applications or applications which do not comply with the requirements will not be processed. Keep in mind that the GRS is not responsible for checking the accuracy or completeness of your application documents. After the submission, the GRS will send you an acknowledgement of receipt by email.

Selection and Legal Information

Scholarships will be awarded by the President of the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg based on the recommendation by the GradV-Awarding-Commission (link to BTU intranet). The commission is expected to meet at the beginning of June and short-listed candidates will be notified by the end of June at the latest. 

Funding will start in January 2022, and it is also possible to start later. We are planning to award 3-4 GradV-Full PhD Scholarships.

GradV-Short-term PhD Scholarship (6 Months) – Guidline for Applicants – Deadline: 28 September 2021

General Information

The GradV-Short-term PhD Scholarship provides funding to complete the doctoral thesis. Only candidates can apply for the scholarship. The basic amount of the scholarship is 1,000 euros per month. If applicants have children and they live in the same household, the GRS can offer a monthly family allowance of 150 euros per child. There is no legal entitlement for being awarded a scholarship.

Eligibility

Short-term scholarship of up to six months will be awarded to complete the dissertation. You can receive the scholarship from January 2022 at the earliest. Eligible for funding are only BTU doctoral/PhD students, who have not received a scholarship of the GRS yet. Due to our limited financial resources, you cannot receive a short-term scholarship for more than six months.

Please do not apply if you are not planning to complete your dissertation within the funding period of six months (e.g., interim funding, etc.). Furthermore, scholarship holders are expected to submit a proof of the submission of their dissertation by the end of the funding period.

  • How do you assess the progress so far and the feasibility of the working plan until submission of the dissertation (remember that this is an application for a short-term scholarship to complete the dissertation; in his report, the supervisor ensures that the candidate will be able to submit the thesis according to the respective doctoral degree regulations by the end of the funding period at the latest)

Other funding opportunities

The GRS can only offer a limited number of PhD scholarships. You should consider alternative funding opportunities for your PhD as soon as possible, for example the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or foundations that offer PhD scholarships.
