Learning Outcome:Environment – not only a technical topic. Understanding of social, ethical and political connections in so-called development countries; facilitating decision making (for future work and research); introduction to basic facts, ideas and problems of Africa
Contents:
  • Introduction into environmental history; environment in pre-colonial, colonial and post-colonial Africa
  • Mobility in Africa. Environment as push – and pull factors (‚voluntary‘ and ‚non-voluntary‘ migrations); refugees; urbanization/megacities
  • Anthropogenic environmental problems and attempts to solve them (waste disposal; waste exports/imports; contamination; soil degradation)
  • Oil in Africa: blessing or curse ? (Examples from various countries)
  • Challenges of the West African coasts
  • Climate Change and Africa Optional: Gwynne Dyer, Schlachtfeld Erde. Klimakriege im 21. Jahrhundert. (Summarizing and commenting)
  • Natural parks: from foreign hunters‘ paradise to ecological nature reserves
  • Special subjects: ‚chickens of death‘ (imported meat products); land grabbing – the new colonization?
  • Search for historical and environmental identity: museums in Africa
  • African Responses and initiatives – consequences of an unbalanced world economic order
