Learning Outcome:

The students will:

  • get a deep understanding of solid biomass conversion and utilization using direct firing, co-firing and gasification.
  • able to perform combustion calculation for solid biomass
  • acquire understanding of the biomass based industrial scale power plants and small scale modular combined heat and power (CHP) systems
  • understand the different technologies for biomass firing and gasification
Contents:Direct combustion of biomass; Combustion technologies of biomass for power generation; Fixed bed and fluidized bed combustion technologies; Biomass power generation and co-generation; Biomass co-firing; Biomass gasification; Gasification systems and technologies; Biomass integrated gasifier combined cycle (BIGCC); Ash formation and handling; Environmental issue of biomass power plants
Recommended Prerequisites:Basics of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics
