Learning Outcome:

The module aims at improving the students’ understanding of Europe as a common market and their competitiveness on the European labour market. It does so by offering both theoretical and practical knowledge.

The theoretical part provides students with an accessible presentation of the key facts, theories and controversies driving rapid economic and political change in Europe. The lecture combines essential elements of European history, institutions, law, politics and policies with clear and accessible micro- and, to a lesser extent, macroeconomic explanations of the economic principles of European integration.

In the practical part students will acquire and consolidate fundamental business English skills which they will need in the European labour market. Major emphasis will be placed on skills which the participants will need to master typical business situations in oral and written form, like presentations, writing business letters, international CVs and more.

Teaching Materials and Literature:

The theoretical part will mainly be based on Baldwin, Richard E. und Charles Wyplosz (2009), The Economics of European Integration, 3rd ed., Berkshire. A full list of references will be handed out in the lecture.

For the practical part a script will be provided.

Assessment Mode for Module Examination:

The module is completed by an exam consisting of two term-accompanying examinations:

(1) A written exam with a duration of 90 minutes for the lecture in the theoretical part, and

(2) written assignments throughout the course, regular tests, a written application for the seminar in the practical part.

The exam grade for the assessment of the module corresponds to the average grade of the two term-accompanying examinations.

In order to accumulate credit points the participant must have attended a minimum of 75% of all classes and must have written all tests or handed in all assignments.

Remarks:Only a maximum of 50 participants can take part in the Essential European Business Skills Seminar in the summer semester. Information on the application procedure will be published prior to the start of the lecture period.

Students who were not able to secure participation in the Essential European Business Skills Seminar in the summer semester can still complete the module by substituting Essential European Business Skills by the Seminar on European Integration in the summer semester. Please refer to the module description of this particular seminar for further information.

The module is jointly organized by Prof. Dr. Athanassios Pitsoulis and Dipl.-Lehrerin Uta Riebow.
