11746 - Renewable Hybrid and Virtual Power Plants Modulübersicht

Module Number: 11746 - module is no longer offered from WS 2023/24
Module Title:Renewable Hybrid and Virtual Power Plants
Hybridkraftwerke und virtuelle Kraftwerke auf Basis Erneuerbarer Erzeugungsanlagen
Department: Faculty 3 - Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Energy Systems
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Dr.-Ing. Pfeiffer, Klaus
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every winter semester
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome:Students will get a deeper understanding in design and structure of hybrid and virtual power plants. The technical correlations for the operation of these units will be presented. Furthermore the regulatory and economic framework will be introduced as well as further influencing factors.
Contents:Renewable Energy technologies and their particular characteristics as well as regulatory framework.

Virtual power plants:
  • Clustering of decentralised units and parks to virtual plants
  • Long-term and short-term prognosis tools for the prediction of active power infeed from the virtual plants
  • Information technologies und control mechanisms for the interconnection of the decentralised units (requirements, concepts, technologies, safety aspects)
  • Influence of the markets to prospective business areas
  • Strategies for the operation of virtual power plants
  • Requirements to the operation of virtual power plants, seen from the grid operator (active power control, voltage-/reactive power control, provision of ancillary services)
  • Examples for virtual power plants (plants operated by direct marketers)
  • Systemic importance of large scale virtual power plants
Hybrid power plants:
  • Differentiation to virtual power plants
  • Special features of large scale cluster grids, connecting hybrid power plants to the upstream power grid
  • Involvement of storage technologies for the control of the active power infeed
  • Impact of the composition of the components of the hybrid power plant to the operating characteristics
  • Certification to fulfil certain power generation criteria by hybrid power plants
  • Examples of current hybrid power plants and prospective tendencies
