13022 - Selected Topics in Statistical Physics Modulübersicht

Module Number: 13022 - module is no longer offered from WS 2021/22
Module Title:Selected Topics in Statistical Physics
  Ausgewählte Kapitel der Statistischen Physik
Department: Faculty 1 - Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Prof. Dr. rer. nat. habil. Bestehorn, Michael
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: On special announcement
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome:After successfully completing the module, students have a good grasp of the description of phase transitions in lattice models, including determination of critical indexes by means of the Wilson renormalization group and elements of non-equilibrium statistics as well as stochastic differential equation with simplest applications. They are able to familiarize themselves with technical topics independently.
Additionally, students can apply their presentation skills and further competences as accurateness, endurance and curiosity purposefully.
Contents:The following topics in statistical physics may serve as examples to demonstrate the methods of attaining new perceptions:
  • Scale invariance in physics
  • Phase transitions
  • Critical indexes, renormalization group
  • Stochastic differential equation, Brownian motion
  • Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics, linear response, Kubo-formula
