Learning Outcome:Students will be able
  • to analyse functional groups,
  • to prepare simple organic compounds,
  • to carry out simple chromatographic experiments,
  • to estimate structure-property relations regarding the physical, chemical and environmental behaviour of simple organic compounds,
  • to describe important classes of natural products (e.g. proteins, DNA),
  • to discribe classes of compounds with industrial and environmental evidence (e.g. organochlorine compounds, tensides).
Contents:
  1. Chemical bond
    (σ- and π-bonds, inductive and mesomeric effects, polarizability)
  2. Important classes of compounds and their functional groups
    alkanes (aliphates), alkenes (olefins), alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, ethers, halogenated hydrocarbons, carbonyl compounds, carbonic acid derivatives, amines, heterocyclic compounds, molecular structures, nomenclature, typical physical and chemical properties, important compounds (and their trivial names)
  3. structure-property relations
    polarity, hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, acid-base properties, electrophilic and nucleophilic reaction centres, property changes within homologous series, behaviour in the environment
  4. Natural products
    amino acids - peptides - proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, molecular structures, important physical and chemical properties, role in metabolism (biochemical function)
  5. Compounds relevant in the industry and in the environment
    plastics, tensides, (poly-)halogenated hydrocarbons, production, important physical and chemical properties, behaviour in the environment
  6. Analytical Chemistry
    chromatography, validation of analytical methods
Recommended Prerequisites:Knowledge of the topics of module
  • 13110 - Basic Natural Sciences
or equivalent
Mandatory Prerequisites:No successful participation in associated phase-out module 13108 Chemie II.

  • Practical training / 2 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Self organised studies / 120 Hours
Teaching Materials and Literature:Practical training script (incl. Exercise book)
Module Examination:Prerequisite + Final Module Examination (MAP)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:Prerequisite:
  • Successful completion of the safety instructions including "check of knowledge"-test, and the subsequent practical training with a minimum score incl. submitting the workbook, which has to be hand in to a given deadline.
Final module examination:
  • Written examination, 90 min.
Evaluation of Module Examination:Performance Verification – graded
