Learning Outcome: | Students will gain a critical perspective on the challenges and the potential of preserving, collecting, exhibiting and communicating art especially with regard to its’ connection to architecture. Thereby a broad insight into various areas and tasks of applied art history and museology will be delivered. Students will develop a critical understanding of the field and gain knowledge about current developments, shifting values and challenges. They will get to know mechanisms, techniques and processes of preserving, presenting and communicating art within its’ historical, political, socio-economic and socio-cultural structures. Students thereby get familiar with the techniques, processes and concepts of making and preserving art, bringing art to the public and dealing with art in museum and gallery contexts. They will be able to apply key-concepts of museology, within their different theoretical and practial aspects and to evaluate methods, technologies and solutions applied in museum contexts. Students will finally be able to identify and communicate the meaning and significance of cultural objects and sites. They will know how to create understandable and well-structured texts for an academic as well as for a public audience. |
Contents: | The module introduces to art historical practices and museum activities in the context of preservation and communication of cultural heritage. It provides insights into the history of the museum as a cultural institution, focusing on present-day challenges and potentials, like e. g. the role of digitization within museum contexts. Museums will be discussed by specific case studies regarding their origins and purposes as well as the theoretical and practical aspects of museology. A main aspect is to examine the transmission of art and achitecture in a time of global change. The critical analysis of strategies, concepts and visions of the respective institutions should always be carried out in the context of current discourses and against the background of the question of the social function and role of the museum in question. The module comprises methodological training to sharpen transferable skills with an emphasis on scientific work and target group oriented description and contextualization of art history in its’ multifaceted dimensions in written and verbal forms of communication. |
