Learning Outcome:Students will have aquired the skill to
  • Name, explain & discuss competently the major approaches to the reflexive and critical heritage studies
  • Use the methodological tools of reflexive heritage studies and reflect on the influence of their positionality on heritage studies
  • Aquire awareness of how inequalities both global and local, e.g. gender, race, class etc. are part of heritage studies.
  • Work and collaborate in diverse teams and learn about and from different perspective
  • Orient themselves within the state of the art of research in reflexive and critical heritage studies
Contents:The module introduces students to the reflexive and critical approach in Heritage Studies:
  • Theories of Critical and reflexive heritage studies
  • Heritage as a social construction, Positionality and heritage studies
  • Heritage and universality and/vs. pluriversality Colonialism and heritage, capitalism and heritage, minority heritage
  • Examples of heritage, global and local and their relation to systemic inequalities (e.g. gender, race, class etc.)

Mandatory Prerequisites:
  • No successful participation in associated phase-out module 37402 Humanities, Social Sciences and Economics.
Forms of Teaching and Proportion:
  • Lecture / 4 Hours per Week per Semester
  • Self organised studies / 120 Hours
Teaching Materials and Literature:Materials are announced in the first week of the semester
Module Examination:Continuous Assessment (MCA)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:
  • Active contribution to module in form of
    • Discussion paper, in group, ~500 words (20%)
    • creative presentation in class, in group (20 %)
    • group work on case study, including paper hand in ~500 words (20%)
  • Exam ~60 min. (40%)
